What is a henna tattoo?

A henna tattoo, also called mehndi, is a temporary design drawn on the skin with paste made from the henna plant. The paste dries on the skin and leaves a stain behind. It starts orange when the paste comes off, then deepens to reddish-brown over the next day or two.

Nothing goes under the skin. As the top layer of skin renews, the design fades on its own, usually within one to two weeks.

Mehndi is the traditional name for henna art in South Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, where it is drawn for weddings, Eid, Diwali and other celebrations. At EyebrowSpa every design is drawn by hand with a cone, the same way a mehndi artist works.

Why real henna is reddish-brown

Real henna is always a reddish-brown color. Products sold as "black henna" often contain PPD, a chemical hair dye that can cause blistering and lasting skin reactions. If anyone offers you jet-black henna, say no.

How long does henna last?

A henna tattoo usually lasts one to two weeks. Hands and palms hold the stain longest; areas you wash often fade sooner. To get the most out of it:

  • Leave the paste on as long as you can; the longer it stays, the darker the stain.
  • Let it flake off on its own, or scrape it away. Don't wash it off.
  • Keep water and soap off the design for the first day.
  • It is darkest about two days after it goes on.

Henna questions

How long does a henna tattoo last?

A henna tattoo usually lasts about one to two weeks (7 to 12 days). It is darkest two days after it is applied, then fades as the skin renews. Keeping the paste on longer and avoiding soap on the area for the first day helps it last.

Is henna safe?

Natural henna stains reddish-brown and is generally safe for skin. Be careful with "black henna," which often contains a chemical dye (PPD) that can cause serious reactions. If you have allergies, ask your artist what is in the paste before you start.

How much does a henna tattoo cost?

Henna is priced by the size and detail of the design, from a single vine on the wrist to full mehndi on both hands. Call EyebrowSpa at (760) 995-4100 with the design you have in mind and we will give you a quote.
